Stonehenge
is probably Britain's most recognised structure. Tourists flock to
visit this national treasure looked after by the English Heritage.
Today
the stones are ruins & are protected from close contact since
1978 with fencing at a distance.
The
site in Wiltshire goes back 5,000 years when a bank & ditch earthwork,
called a henge, was constructed.
Stonehenge
was built around 2,000 BC with an inner circle of 80 small bluestones,
which weighed about 4 tons each. The Outer ring was constructed with
giant sarsen stones weighing about 50 tons each. On the tops of these
were placed lintels & was completed around 1500 BC.
|
Why
it was built? Who & how it was built mainly remains unsure.
The Druids today still worship at the site & have been associated
with the stones for many years. There are also links with King
Arthur with Merlin supposedly involved with bringing the stones
from Ireland.
Whatever
the history it remains a mystical & impressive place that
will continue to be popular with tourists & visitors &
should be protected for our future.

and appearance of the people, their fashions in clothing, ornaments,
equipment and weapons, in arts and crafts. He looks at population
levels and social and political organization and reveals that
these people of over 4000 years ago were much more numerous, organized
and technologically skilled than... more

Stonehenge
Complete
Christopher Chippindale
Amazon Synopsis:
When the first edition of "Stonehenge Complete" was
published, it won the British Archaeological Book Award. People
have puzzled over Stonehenge for centuries: speculating and dreaming
about it, drawing and painting it, trying to make sense of it.
Here is the story of the one real Stonehenge, as well as the many
unreal Stonehenge that archaeologists, tourists, mystics, astronomers,
artists, poets and visionaries have made out of it. This new edition
has been revised and updated to include the latest theories and
discoveries, bringing the Stonehenge story into the 1990s. Christopher
Chippindale is editor of the international archaeological journal

Amazon Synopsis:
The spectacular stone circles of western Europe, some nearly 6000
years old, have intrigued viewers through the ages. This beautiful
book about these megalithic rings explores their ancestry, methods
of construction, and eventual desertion. A substantially revised
version of Aubrey Burl's highly praised book The Stone Circles
of the British Isles, it offers new insights into the purpose
of stone circles. It also provides a new interpretation of Stonehenge
and of Callanish in Scotland, the first overview of the cromlechs
in Brittany, a discussion of the problems of archaeo-astronomy
as related to stone circles, and includes a greatly expanded Gazetteer,
and an up-to-date list of radiocarbon dates and recent excavations.
